JOSH PASS

1/1

Artist Statement

Josh’s work is architecturally inspired adornment for space that is a reaction to life, nature and interpersonal communication.  He draws inspiration from the historical forms of African, Oceanic and Northwest Coast Native American cultures as well as drawing upon modern architectural achievements. Each piece carries a message of seeking balance within our selves, one another, and with our environment. His pieces are in private collections spanning from coast to coast and also in sculpture parks located in Colorado and Washington State. He has been honored to participate in Sculpture In The Park, the largest outdoor sculpture show and sale in the United States, for the past four years. Incorporating art into life, and life into art, are his goals and he is driven to pursue them as far as he can.

Bio

Joshua Pass has followed generation after generation in his family of being a maker while being the first to venture into the world of fine art.  Art was important early in his life as he developed a strong infatuation with any educational opportunity to learn about visually communicating.  His history and experiences are what feed his art; born 1979 a native to Colorado, vast open spaces and dramatic plane changes are important and communicate where he is from.  A love for various cultures informs his art; references to Eastern culture, Western culture and Native cultures all can be found in his work.  Joshua’s life path also plays an important part in feeding his work.  Starting out as a machinist, he learned how to transform metal through the use of various tools. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at MSCD in 2008 and during this time Joshua realized how important workshops, lectures and short mentorships can be as they have really shaped him as an artist. The most influential artists that he has worked with are Mike Clapper, Carl Reed, Mark Cezark, Dennis Sohocki, and Vivian Beer. Seeking to be more involved in the arts he took a job at a designer jewelry company, Todd Reed Inc.  Working his way up from a bench jeweler he has found himself working closely with the designer on new designs as well as taking on a managerial role.  That experience has really fortified his sense of design, production and leadership. Visually communicating through making art is very important to Joshua; it is imperative for him to be in the studio as much as possible.
