Artist Statement

Indigenous art, vast open spaces, and dramatic plain changes of the American southwest shape my expression of line, form, and space. Architecture, relationships, and ritual are prominent inspirations in my sculpture. I am drawn to architecture because of the strong bold lines and that it is the way in which knowledge, wealth, and great accomplishments of past and present civilizations are marked and evaluated. Relationships are important as they create tension between people, the environment, and objects; they can be positive or negative but they shape how we interact within our world. I love ritual; it is present in every level of our lives from the start of our day to the most important sacred ceremony. The ritual that I deeply connect with is the ringing of a bell. There is something really special about the sound that marks a time, an occasion, or completes a thought or prayer. The results are simple and bold pieces that visually narrate the dynamics that I see within our world.

Bio

Joshua Pass has followed generation after generation in his family of being a maker.  Art was important early in his life as he developed a strong desire for any educational opportunity to learn about visually communicating.  His history and experiences are what feed his art; born in 1979 a native of Colorado, vast open spaces and dramatic plane changes are important and communicate where he is from.  A love for Megalithic and tribal cultures informs his art.  Joshua’s life path also plays an important part in shaping his work.  Starting out as a machinist, he learned how to transform metal into precision functional objects. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Metropolitan State College of Denver in 2008. The most influential artists that he has worked with are Mike Clapper, Dennis Sohocki, Gilberto Romero, and Vivian Beer. Before graduating college and seeking to be more involved in the arts, Joshua worked for designer jewelry company, Todd Reed Inc.  Working his way up from a bench jeweler, he found himself as a studio manager, working closely with the designer on the development of new designs. That valuable experience fortified his sense of design, production, and leadership. After a decade of finding his voice and building up his studio, Joshua started Rare Elementz Studio LLC and is currently working full-time as a sculptor. Visually communicating through making art is imperative to Joshua’s process and purpose.
